The benefits of studying with Buacouns Studies

— why study here

An education that holds
its content to account.

What sets the work at Buacouns Studies apart is not a proprietary system or a special method. It is a commitment to the primary document and the time to read it properly.

— key advantages

What you gain by studying here

Real documents, not abstractions

Every course works directly with published documents — annual reports, account terms, fee schedules. Students read what is actually written, not a simplified version of it.

A group small enough to think in

Cohorts of around fifteen allow each student to ask questions at length, raise disagreements, and work through the material with the full attention of the instructor.

Malaysia-specific throughout

Examples are drawn from Bursa Malaysia listings and Malaysian financial products. There is no need to translate lessons from an overseas context.

Written work reviewed personally

Students submit written exercises and receive individual written commentary. This is more demanding than multiple-choice assessment, and considerably more useful.

Evening schedule for working adults

All courses run in the evening. Students do not need to take leave or alter their working arrangements to attend.

No commercial agenda

Buacouns Studies does not receive referral fees or sponsorship from financial institutions. The courses are funded entirely by course fees.

— in more detail

Each advantage, set out plainly

Instructors who practise what they teach

The instructors at Buacouns Studies read financial documents regularly as part of their own practice. They are not presenting a summary learned from a textbook but bringing the experience of someone who has worked through these documents many times and knows where the difficulties tend to lie.

  • Over eight years teaching financial reading in adult education settings
  • Worked examples drawn from current, publicly available documents
  • Curriculum reviewed before each new cohort

A course structure built for retention

Each course follows a weekly rhythm of reading, written exercise, and group discussion. The pace is set to allow students to consolidate what they have covered before moving on. There is no acceleration to cover more topics at the cost of depth.

  • Weekly reading assignments from primary documents
  • Written exercises after each session
  • Individual written commentary on each student's work

Direct access to the instructor

In a cohort of fifteen, every student has direct access to the instructor during sessions and by correspondence between sessions. Questions that arise during private reading can be brought to the following session or raised by email beforehand.

  • Email correspondence between sessions welcomed
  • Time set aside in each session for questions
  • Written feedback on every exercise submitted

Clear, all-in fees

The course fee covers attendance at all sessions, all printed reading materials, and written feedback on all exercises. There are no additional charges for materials, assessments, or certificates of attendance.

  • Foundations of Personal Finance — RM 980
  • Reading Company Reports — RM 1,840
  • Tutored Reading Companion — RM 3,640 per term

A skill that lasts

The aim of each course is not to provide a set of answers but to develop a capacity for careful reading that students can apply to new documents throughout their lives. Students who have completed the Foundations course have reported returning to re-read documents they previously found opaque.

  • Transferable reading skills, not just product knowledge
  • Applicable to documents encountered years after the course
  • Continuing support available through the Reading Companion

— what sets us apart

Distinctive features of the studio

The ledger tradition

The studio takes its name and its orientation from the ledger — the record-keeping tradition that requires precision, patience, and honesty about what the numbers say. These qualities inform how courses are taught.

Taught in central Kuala Lumpur

Premises in Wisma Hong Leong, Jalan Perak, are well-served by public transport and accessible to working adults across the city and Klang Valley.

Curriculum updated each cohort

Reading materials and worked examples are reviewed before every new intake to ensure they reflect current Bursa Malaysia reports and up-to-date Malaysian financial products.

A path beyond the first course

The Tutored Reading Companion provides a continuing arrangement for students who have finished a course and want to keep reading with guidance. The studio is designed to support long-term study, not just a single intake.
