I attended the Foundations course in February. What I appreciated most was that the instructor was not trying to sell me anything. He read the documents with us, pointed to the sections that mattered, and asked us to write down what we noticed. By week four I was reading my own unit trust documents differently — not more confidently, exactly, but more carefully.

I completed the Reading Company Reports course last October. The pace was slower than I expected — we spent two sessions on the notes to the accounts, which felt excessive at the time — but those were the sessions I have thought about most since. The written exercises were demanding. I had to rewrite two of them before the commentary suggested I had understood the point. Worth it.

Ampang · secondary school teacher

I had tried reading about personal finance online but always felt I was being directed towards a conclusion someone else had already drawn. The Foundations course was different. We read actual documents, not summaries, and the instructor encouraged disagreement. I left with more questions than I arrived with, which is probably the right outcome.

Subang Jaya · accountant

As an accountant I assumed I already understood annual reports well enough. I enrolled in the Company Reports course mostly out of curiosity. What I found was that I had been reading these documents quickly, skipping sections I assumed I understood. The course slowed me down. I now read the notes to the accounts before I read the primary statements, which I would never have done before.

I found the Tutored Reading Companion after completing the Foundations course. Meeting fortnightly with a tutor has changed how I approach my reading. The tutor suggested some Bursa Malaysia reports I would never have chosen myself, and the written commentary she gave on my notes was genuinely useful. The arrangement suits me better than a formal course because I can follow my own curiosity.

Setapak · government officer

The evening schedule made it possible for me to attend without taking leave. I appreciated that the group was small — about twelve in my cohort — because it meant questions were answered properly rather than brushed aside. The instructor is clearly not interested in covering material quickly. He is interested in whether we have actually understood it.

A few accounts in more detail

case study · foundations course

From quarterly statements set aside unread, to documents opened the day they arrive

the situation before

A bank officer from Kuala Lumpur had been receiving EPF and unit trust statements for nine years without reading them carefully. She had a general idea of her balance but no clear understanding of fees, allocation, or how her choices had been described in writing.

what the course provided

Six weeks of structured reading, including a session dedicated to EPF account statements and two sessions on unit trust fee disclosures. Weekly written exercises required her to identify specific figures and note any discrepancies between the summary and the detail.

after six weeks

She reported reading her next quarterly statement the same day it arrived and identifying a fee that had changed without her noticing. She wrote: "I had been paying this for three years. I would never have caught it if I had not learned to look for it."

"The course did not tell me what to do. It showed me what to read. That turned out to be more useful." — N.R.A., cohort February 2025

Reading an annual report without a financial background

the situation before

A secondary school geography teacher from Shah Alam wanted to understand the companies whose shares she had inherited from her father. She had attempted to read annual reports twice and given up after the first few pages.

what the course provided

Eight weeks of close reading of Bursa Malaysia annual reports, beginning with the structure of the document before moving to the financial statements. The instructor spent three sessions on the notes — the section she had previously skipped entirely.

after eight weeks

She completed a written analysis of one of the inherited companies as the course's final exercise. Her tutor's commentary noted that she had correctly identified a related-party transaction that was disclosed only in the notes. She enrolled in the Tutored Reading Companion the following term.

"I came in thinking I needed a finance background. I left understanding that I needed a reading habit." — S.F., cohort January 2025
